We use a griddle for pancakes sometimes and use a spray butter on it. I've lived in 3 apartments with crappy (dirty, dirty, dirty) appliances and can't hardly stand gunk now that I have nice, pretty, new appliances. (The people we bought this house from took all of their's with them... we didn't have much choice.)
Well, I have discovered that Goo Gone is awesome for getting the residue left by spray butter off. Your appliance will shine! : )
